The second half of the eighteenth century saw a change in taste toward the neoclassical that was eventually to affect nearly all the literature, art, and architecture of the period. The story of this Greek revival begins in 1748 with Stuart and Revett’s plans to measure and publish the archaeological remains of ancient architecture in Greece. This volume is the first comprehensive study of the influence of this trip, the effect of the subsequent archaeological publications, and their relationship to architectural theory and taste.The author describes the patrons, the travelers, and the special characters of the individual voyages and publications, their widening influence, and their source in traditional architectural theory.
