This volume, containing over 650 photographs, is a comprehensive photographic documentation of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture in Istanbul. General views, exterior and interior views, structural details, architectural sculpture and decoration are all included in the first serious attempt to prepare a visual survey in over fifty years. Most of the photographs are published here for the first time and have been selected from approximately 10,000 taken by the author to present a uniform and thorough coverage which will greatly facilitate the study of Constantinople's ancient monuments. In old photographs found in little known archives which record structures now destroyed or extensively altered. The individual illustrations are keyed to plans of the buildings in a precise system which will allow the reader to easily establish the exact location of each view illustrated. Dr. Mathews provides a survey of the state of research and a bibliography for each of the forty monuments.

Thomas F. Mathews, whose The Early Churches of Constantinople: Architecture and Liturgy received the 1972 Hitchcock Award of the Society of Architectural Historians, is a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
