Illustrations to the Italian Volumes of Bartsch's Le Peintre Graveur
- Publish Date: 12/25/1970
The volume-by-volume publication of the illustrations to Bartsch’s vast catalogue of old master prints has long been a desideratum in art-historical studies, not only for museums, print collectors, and dealers, but also as a visual reference for anyone concerned with the sources, iconography, or style of a given print.
Although these volumes are primarily intended as a visual reference for the thousands of prints described by Bartsch, every effort is being made to observe the print specialist’s particular needs by selecting the finest impressions and reproducing them with the highest possible fidelity. The scholars in Europe and America who have been chosen to edit the various volumes are also preparing annotation volumes to bring Bartsch’s material up to date in the light of recent critical scholarship. The illustrated Bartsch will thus provide not only a much-needed visual reference for the Italian volumes of Le Peintre Graveur, but also a unique and comprehensive survey of Italian Renaissance and Baroque prints.
Published with the cooperation of the Albertina, the British Museum, the Warburg Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
