The Journal for the History of Rhetoric (JHR) is the peer-reviewed publication of the American Society for the History of Rhetoric. JHR (formerly called Advances in the History of Rhetoric) publishes high-quality scholarship on all historical aspects of rhetoric, in all historical periods, and with reference to all intellectual, national, and cultural communities. The journal welcomes contributions from scholars working both within and outside the typical historical rhetorical canon, as well as scholars who consider multiple media and take diverse approaches, and those willing to experiment with essays addressing issues in rhetorical history but written in historical rhetorical forms.

The Journal for the History of Rhetoric is published on behalf of the American Society for the History of Rhetoric.

To submit a manuscript to Journal for the History of Rhetoric, please visit http://www.editorialmanager.com/jhrjournal. The online system will guide you through the steps to upload your article to the editorial office. Refer to these submission guidelines before uploading your manuscript.

The editorial criteria used to evaluate submissions are quality and significance of the research. Manuscripts submitted to JHR should be original, previously unpublished (in whole or part), and not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

The language of publication is English. There are no fixed limits on maximum or minimum length of manuscripts for submission, though manuscripts of more than 25,000 words can rarely be accepted for publication. Submissions may represent any standard format for reporting historical research, including, among other possibilities, essays, bibliographies, critical editions, translations, and brief notes.

Submissions are refereed anonymously. Each manuscript should contain a separate title page containing the author’s name, academic position, affiliation, address, telephone number, an e-mail address, and an abstract of 100 words or less.

The title should be repeated on the first page of the text. The author’s identity should not be revealed anywhere in the text of the manuscript (e.g., in first person references to previous research, in references to previous versions of the manuscript as a lecture or conference presentation, or in acknowledgements of assistance from colleagues). Submissions accepted for publication will be modified to account for omissions and other measures taken by authors to ensure their anonymity during manuscript review.

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout and generally documented according to the style of Chicago 17th ed. Author-Date format. For manuscripts that have recourse to languages using non-Latin alphabets (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Russian), special platform and font requirements related to electronic copies may be required.
